The geology of the 15-mile long Volcan Mountain range is complex and fascinating—especially if you’re talking to Fred Jee!  Fred is a geologist, retired supervising ranger from Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and 37-year resident of nearby Borrego Springs.  He loves to share his vast knowledge of local geology in an entertaining and humorous fashion.

Hike & History Exploration: Tuesday, October 21st, Explore VMF’s New Watershed Trail & Learn About the Grand Family on Volcan Mountain

Tuesday, October 21st at 9am, the Volcan Mountain Foundation and Julian’s informal Tuesday morning hiking group are co-hosting a hike and history exploration at VMF’s Volcan Mountain Nature Center (22850 Volcan Road, Julian, CA 92036).  Local historians Ed Huffman and Albert Simonson will share their extensive knowledge of early European settlers who lived on the mountain, including the Grand family.

2 in 1: Native American Literature Presentation and Watershed Tour & Training

Saturday, October 25th, 9am the public is invited to join Volcan Mountain Foundation (VMF) interpretive volunteers and docents at VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center (22850 Volcan Road, Julian, CA 92036) to learn more about Native American Literature through an ancestral perspective.  Presenter Dr. Theresa Gregor is a descendent from the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel, where she grew up, and has spent most of her life.  She has a Ph.D.

Beginning Tracker/Naturalist Class with San Diego Tracking Team

If you have wanted to learn about wildlife tracking and get lots of practical field experience, this class is for you!  As the Volcan Mountain Foundation is also working to establish a team of trained trackers that can eventually participate in wildlife surveys, this would be a great way to help learn more about and protect the wildlife on and around Volcan Mountain.
